Exhibit Story:

The story we are telling through this exhibit is the past, present, and future of South Dakota. Three key concepts that are guiding the overall design are the people, places, and things that truly make South Dakota its own unique entity. Across all three walls, we will tell the story of how South Dakota came to be and where it is going in the years to come.

Design Vision:

Each wall has its own distinct time period of events, people, and inventions that will be highlighted. When someone walks into the South Dakota Exhibit, they should be able to get a feel for the hard work that took place for South Dakota becoming a state and how it continues to expand through various enhancements.

The background on the walls will be a geographical map of South Dakota that pinpoints the major cities and landmarks across the state. Additionally, we will incorporate small details representing the environment of South Dakota, such as the grasslands, rolling hills, Badlands, state flower, state bird, etc.

When individuals visit this exhibit, they will be able to get a sense of the atmosphere, the important history that shaped the state, and what to expect or anticipate in the future.

Wall 1: Prehistory (10,000+ year ago - Statehood)

During this period, the goal is to share the significant moments that shaped the beginning of South Dakota. People who are not familiar with South Dakota's history should be able to follow along on the timeline, but also learn more about key figures and the innovations within this time period, about what came before. Historically, the people are what resonates the most during this time as it leads into the 20th Century.

Wall 2: 20th Century (Statehood - 2000s)

Moving into the 20th Century, this is when South Dakota transformed into its own place. Bigger innovations are on the rise, more key figures are stepping up, and life is moving beyond the prairie. The goal of this wall is to signify the impact of the places that make up South Dakota.

Wall 3: South Dakota Today and Going Forward (2000s - Present)

Entering the 2000s, South Dakota has completely modernized to the times, and this is primarily due to the new developments that represent the state on a much larger scale. The goal of this wall is to emphasize the things that have transpired from South Dakota's original history and background into notable identifiers. Innovation has been a leading factor in the boom of agriculture, business, cybersecurity, research, and more.
